Ribbon and Stick: How to Choose for a Gymnast?
Ribbon for Rhythmic Gymnastics
Main characteristics Stick; Ribbon; Carabiner.
The length of the ribbon is strictly determined by standards and depends on the age and rank of the athlete. It varies from 4 to 6 meters and is typically made of satin or viscose.
A carabiner is necessary to connect the stick and the ribbon, allowing the ribbon to perform free rotational movements. Carabiners are typically made of metal and must withstand heavy loads.
Storage and care tips for the ribbon
For transporting the ribbon, it's best to use a special spool—a device onto which the ribbon is wound. This helps prevent tearing and maintains the ribbon's original appearance for longer.
Important:
Any alterations to the ribbon violate FIG rules.
DO NOT IRON the area where the FIG confirmation mark is applied at both ends of the ribbon (the mark may be damaged).
DO NOT WASH the ribbon, as it may shrink. Starching or exposure to water and chemicals can damage the fabric. Store the ribbon away from direct sunlight and high temperatures to preserve its color.
Stick for the Ribbon
General considerations
The stick is an integral part of rhythmic gymnastics, attached to the ribbon using a special metal carabiner or a nylon braid. Athletes choose a comfortable carabiner, with rope ones less likely to snag on the ribbon and metal ones being stronger.
Standard stick sizes are 50, 57, and 60 cm, chosen based on the gymnast's age, height, training level, and the ribbon's length.
MATERIAL
Sticks are commonly made of fiberglass, with rubber handles for better grip and to prevent dropping.
GRIP
The grip reduces slipping in the gymnast's hands and may need periodic replacement due to wear. Lubricating the stick with a soapy solution before fitting a new grip is recommended.
STICK HANDLE CAP
Children's caps are available for stick protection, though not intended for competition use. Additionally, special caps can be used for extra protection.
Care for the stick
Store and transport the stick in a special tube case. A dedicated case for storing both the stick and the ribbon together is also available.
